Do you think it would be a good idea to add a low passing Hurricane to this diorama? Just like on this picture:

Any ideas how to simulate spinning prop blur in 1/72 scale?

positioning the hurricane overhead is not easy; either use fishing wire to make it pending or a transparent pedestal which would distract from the ground view.. the spinning prop is not taht difficult. I used plastic from blister wrappings to cut a circle with diameter of prop. Than scratched some motion blur in plastic in circular lines. works well.

Wow... and double WOW! Fantastic! Your fingers must be really small to fit the pilot in the cockpit and start the engine!!! The attention to detail is stunning and the little add on's really add life to the work. A lot going on in such a small space. It really captures a scramble. Simply amazing!!!!!

First class work, Reflected, this gives a fantastic atmosphere!!

If you're wanting spinning prop effect for photos only, try using the camera on a longer exposure (not too long!) and set up a hair dryer to blow onto the props. So long as they turn freely enough they'll show up quite realistically in the picture, especially if they are turning before the exposure and beyond it - i.e. don't let them stop in the middle!!

I took some photos of a Tamiya 1:48 scale Lanc BIII, 25 yrs ago when i was still at school, and it gave a fair impression of the real thing gunning up at dispersal on a dark night. Sadly, I can't find the photos as they're boxed up in the attic....

Hope this helps. Good luck with getting the Hurri into it, can't wait to see the result!

I'm in trouble:

Of what squadron should that low passing Hurricane be in order to be historrically correct? I need a Hurricane squadron, wich stationned at Biggin Hill in september, 1940. Or maybe at Kenley, he just took off, and now makes a low pass over Biggin(?) .
Thanks in advance!

PS: the code can't contain the following letters: Q, J, K ,S .

Hi Reflected, checked the MoD Battle of Britain pages (http://www.raf.mod.uk/Bob1940/units.html) and the following squadrons flew Hurris from Biggin in the later stages of the battle:

No 79 Squadron from 27 August 1940 to 8 September 1940 (Sqn code AL)
No 141 Squadron from 13 September to 18 September 1940 (sqn code GZ)

and from Kenley:

No 253 Squadron from 29 August 1940 to end of battle (sqn code SW)
No 501 Squadron from 10 September 1940 to end battle (Sqn code SD)

Hope that helps,

OF

Many thanks! :D

That 79 squadron seems OK. Even if they left Biggin the 8th September, the same day when 92 squadron arrived. So my plane will be AL+H so with the roundel it will be like ALOH, wich is almost ALOHA :D

Although, I was thinking, and even if it's not historrically correct, I'm planning to build Tim Elkington's JX-O. The only problem is that I don't have that hornet decal. Did every plane have that special emblem?

Reflected, did you know that you can buy blank sheets of decal paper and print onto them using a black or colour laser printer? You can't use an ink jet printer unfortunately or the ink will run when you 'float' the decal off the backing.

I have some sheets here that I used to make decals for the face plates on an electronic device I invented and built more than 40 examples of. Once printed you cut out the decal and float off in water as normal.

Just for info too did you also know that you can protect your decals and prevent them from drying out and peeling off your model by coating either just the decal or the entire model with a clear acrylic coating that is readily available from hardware stores world-wide? The product is either known as Johnson 'Future' or Johnson 'Klear' depending on where in the world you are. Info about the product can be found here.....

http://www.ndrr.com/rmr_faq/Models/Future-Floor-Wax.htm

...or just Google up the terms Future, floor polish and modelling for more hits.

Thanks! That seems very complicated, I guess I'll try to paint it with my bare hand!
The best I can hope is that Mr. Elkington posts here saying "No, my plane didn't have that emblem on the nose" :D
